PC banking for small firms

A San Rafael company has introduced a computer cash management system that links small businesses with financial institutions. It is the first system available for personal computers.

Telepay Express, developed by Datatech EDI Systems, lets small businesses use modems to do such things as make electronic payments. They also can obtain electronic records from their financial institution.

The system works with Bank of America's Business Connection Service [1]. Some features are available to Union Bank customers. Sigrid Marmann, president, is estrablishing connections with other institutions.

Datatech uses an accounting package developed by San Jose-based Computer Associates to let a business owner, treasurer, accountant or manager send and receive information. For instance, a bank can be told electronically to pay vendor accounts. The bank would transfer money to the designated institution or issue a cashier's check and make note of the transaction in the business' account.

Bank statements for a day, or several months, can be brought up on the screen instantly, Marmann said.

While large corporations have been using mainframe computers for electronic data interchange, Datatech is the first company to make EDI available for PCs. The package was introduced by the 7-year-old company last month and is used by United Way in Los Angeles and others.

According to Marmann, Datatech consists of herself, a vice president, a part time assistant, three free-lance programmers, and a marketing consultant.

Before introducting Telepay Express, Marmann offered computer accounting installation and services.

Offices are at 2169A Francisco Blvd. East. For information call 258-0184.
